SOUTH FLORIDA CHAPTER ANNOUNCEMENTS April 13, 2012
Hello Everyone: Our May Chapter Meeting is just around the corner and it looks to be an exciting get-together. On tap as our keynote speaker will be University of Miami Professor Dr. Donald Spivey, discussing his newest book, If You Were Only White: The Life of Leroy “Satchel” Paige. In addition, documentary film-maker, Sam Bradley and historian Stephen Smith will share in a presentation of the 1952 Florida International League pennant race between the Miami Sun Sox and Miami Beach Flamingos. I wonder which club will come out on top? I have received confirmation earlier this week that joining us in the audience will be former major league shortstop Humberto “Chico” Fernandez. He was a member of the aforementioned 1952 Sun Sox, and enjoyed an eight-year big league career with stops along the way with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers and New York Mets. He also spent 10 seasons plying his craft in the Cuban Winter Leagues mostly spent in a Cienfuegos Elefantes uniform and in 1997 was named to Miami’s Cuban Baseball Hall-of-Fame. I encourage everyone to participate with your local Chapter and bring along family and friends. Attending your South Florida Chapter Meeting’s is an excellent opportunity to meet other baseball aficionados with like-minded interests, as well as partaking of top-notch speakers. I look forward to seeing you there. Where: Tamarac Public Library
SOUTH FLORIDA CHAPTER ANNOUNCEMENTS March 21, 2012 Hello Everyone: They say that April showers bring May flowers. Well if that’s the case there will be a good deal of blooming in the South Florida Chapter on May 19th. We have a very exciting day planned for our upcoming meeting which will be held at our home turf, the Tamarac Public Library Multi-Purpose Room. Our keynote speaker with be the esteemed Dr. Donald Spivey, a Professor History at the University of Miami. Dr. Spivey will be addressing our group about his newest book, If You Were Only White: The Life of Leroy “Satchel” Paige.Specifically, Dr. Spivey will be focusing on Paige’s personal life and Florida experience. Dr. Spivey spent twelve years working on his latest work that explores the legacy of one of the most exception athletes ever, an entertainer extraordinaire, a daring showman and crowd-pleaser, a wizard with a baseball whose artistry and antics on the mound brought fans out in the thousands to ballparks throughout the United States, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean for nearly 40 years. Paige was that and so much more. At another level, his saga offers an immensely valuable and unique perspective on 20th Century African experience when understood in the historical context of the forces, events and dynamics of his journey. Paige’s life intertwined with many of the most important issues of the times in the history of the American nation in general and with African Americans in particular. Dr. Spivey currently teaches History at the University of Miami and the author or editor of five books including; Fire From the Soul: A history of the African-American Struggle (2003); The Politics of Miseducation: The Booker Washington Institute of Liberia 1929-1984 (1986); Schooling For the New Slavery: Black Industrial Education 1868-1915 (1978), Sport in America: New Historical Perspective (1985), and Union and the Black Musician: The Narrative of William Everret Samuels and Chicago Local 208 (1984). Dr. Spivey has taught at the University of California at Davis, Wright State University, the University of Michigan, the University of Connecticut and has been with the University of Miami since 1993. He has received numerous recognitions including appointment to the Search Committee for Historians of the United States House of Representatives; Cooper Fellow of the College Arts and Sciences, recipient of the Ronald McDonald House “Twelve Good Men Award” for Distinguished Community Service in Miami; and the Excellence in Teaching Award of the University of Miami. He is also a member of NASSH and SABR. In addition, documentary film-maker Sam Bradley and historian and fellow SABR’ite Stephen Smith will be doing a presentation on the famous down to the wire 1952 Florida International League pennant race. Sam Bradley is a film-maker and recent University of Miami graduate. His latest interests surround the 1952 FIL pennant race that went down to the wire between the Miami Sun Sox and Miami Beach Flamingos. Stephen Smith is a retired CPA and member of the Field of Dreams Chapter. He was done extensive research on minor league baseball with a long-time emphasis on his hometown Keokuk, Iowa team. Since retiring to sunny Florida he has extended his research to encompass the Florida International League because of the connection of the FIL and his hometown team. Steve has also written three biographies for the SABR Bio Project. As always, I encourage our members to invite family and friends to our meetings. This is a special day and one that you won’t want to miss; I hope to see as many of you at the get-together. Besides our special guests you never know who you are going to run into at an event.
